Overview

The FC100 is designed for use with the SG000 Strike Guard lightning detector as part of the CS110 and LW110 lightning warning systems. The SG000 outputs its data signal via fiber-optic cable, and the FC100 is installed at the end of the fiber-optic cable and before the datalogger. The FC100 converts a fiber-optic data signal into an RS-232 signal for a lightning-proof connection between the sensor and the datalogger.

The FC100 can also be used as an RS-232 link between two serial devices (datalogger to PC) separated by less than 328 ft (100 m). The FC100 is a DCE device, so a null modem cable is needed between it and a datalogger.

Technical Description

The FC100 is designed for use with the SG000 Strike Guard lightning detector as part of the CS110 lightning warning system. The SG000 outputs its data signal via fibre-optic cable, and the FC100 is installed at the end of the fibre-optic cable and before the data logger. The FC100 converts a fibre-optic data signal into an RS-232 signal for a lightning-proof connection between the sensor and the data logger.

The FC100 can also be used as an RS-232 link between two serial devices (data logger to PC) separated by less than 328 ft (100 m). The FC100 is a DCE device so a null modem cable will be needed between it and a data logger.

  1. With a good signal strength, 1200 to 19,200 bps.
  2. The data transmission fibers are fragile and cannot be bent or broken. Consequently, the fibers need to be handled with care and protected inside a conduit (usually PVC).
  3. Short-fiber runs sometimes pass too much signal. The solution is to pull the fiber part way out of the holding ferrule.
  4. The FC100 provides instant termination—no connectors, crimping, polishing, or epoxy.
  5. 100 m (330 ft) with a 1.0 mm poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA) core with a PVC or polyethylene jacket, simplex or duplex; up to 1 km with a higher-grade fiber.
  6. They provide lightning-proof and lightning-safe serial communication that eliminates the need for transient suppression devices.
  7. The FC100 is designed for lightning-proof and lightning-safe serial communication. Because the FC100 offers PMMA or glass fibers that are not conductive, electrical surges (such as those caused by lightning) cannot travel between the modems.
  8. Direct communication between two RS-232 serial devices, such as a PC to a datalogger or a datalogger to a serial sensor.
  9. The 12 Vdc power supply keeps the signal from dropping when large data packets are transmitted.
  10. The FC100 is required to communicate with the SG000 Strike Guard Lightning Sensor. The SG000 is an option for the CS110 Electric Field Sensor and the LW110 Lightning Warning System.
