Overview

The 385 is an electrically heated rain gage that provides year-round measurement of rain or snow. It is a tipping-bucket rain gage widely used in environmental monitoring applications. The 385 funnels precipitation into a bucket mechanism that tips and actuates a switch. The momentary switch closure is counted by the pulse-counting circuitry of any of the Campbell Scientific dataloggers. The gage is heated so that frozen precipitation melts and is measured right away as a liquid.

Technical Description

The 385 uses a 115-Vac blanket heater to provide year-round measurement of rain or snow. This sensor requires an adequately grounded, reliable ac power source.

The 385 measures in 0.01" increments and has a 12" diameter orifice. It funnels precipitation into a bucket mechanism that tips and activates a reed switch when filled to its calibrated level. The switch closure is recorded by the datalogger. The 385 is compatible with all Campbell Scientific dataloggers.

Before July 1994, the 385 used a cartridge heater. Met One will upgrade that cartridge heater to the blanket heater.

Related FAQs

Number of FAQs related to 385-L: 2

  1. The information included on a calibration sheet differs with each sensor. For some sensors, the sheet contains coefficients necessary to program a datalogger. For other sensors, the calibration sheet is a pass/fail report.

  2. This depends on the information contained in the calibration sheet:

    • If the calibration sheet contains coefficient information, Campbell Scientific keeps a copy, and a replacement copy can be requested.
    • If the calibration sheet does not contain coefficients, Campbell Scientific does not keep a copy. It may be possible to contact the original manufacturer for a replacement copy.
