GPRS an option ?

cellectronic Jun 21, 2010 04:29 PM

Hello all.
I currently run a CR10x based weather station at home and it is connected to my PC via a serial cable.
I would like to resite the station to a remote location, can anyone suggest a good communication method ?
I would like to get data from the logger every 15 mins, at the moment Weather Display is doing this and I use WD Live to show the data on the net. I have a Wavecom Surpeme modem kicking around and wondered if GPRS would be an option.
The dc power for the station is no problem and also there is an open wifi service available.
Many thanks for any help.
Steve .

The CR10X has no concept of TCP/IP so any mode you use that supports GPRS will need to act as an IP Serial server, i.e. take care of the TCP/IP stack and connecting to the network by itself.

CS have never officially supported the GPRS mode of operation with the CR10X and a Wavecom modem. This can be done with a Sierra Wireless Raven modem that is sold by CS in the US and is available in Europe now (although not stocked by CS UK). The modem is quite powerful and has lots of diagnostics but I should warn you is relatively expensive.

See: http://www.campbellsci.com/ravenxtg-specifications You would need a generic version not one certified for a US phone company if outside the US.

An alternative if you have a Wavecom modem and you can access a network that support CSD (circuit switched data - dial-up) is to use dial-up access from another GSM modem which has a SIM card with inclusive minutes. This may be as cheap although you might have to reduce the calling frequency to keep within your call allowance. It is generally much easier to setup and keep running.

HI, Thanks for the reply.
Am I correct in then saying if I were to connect the CR10X to an NL100 (or third party serial server) and also the GPRS modem this would help me achieve my aim.
I would be willing to read up on this matter if I could find some site that has a similar setup, This would be usefull in helping me with the project. Maybe if someone knows of such a site they could post me the link.
Many thanks.
