CF

Is there any difference between CF memory cards? I have the CR1000 with CFM100 card reader and a 256CF card purchased from Campbell. This card works, the reader and the program recognize it yet not the same story with another 1G and 2G CF cards. The program simply tells me that the card inserted is "unknown", why? Is the FAT on the cards? I must format them or simply there is new tech with the same name?

Not all CF cards are created equal. Campbell Scientific offers and recommends CF cards manufactured by Silicon Systems. Silicon Systems cards are industrial-grade and have passed our ESD testing. Only industrial-grade CF cards with a storage capacity of 2 Gbytes or less should be used with our products.

If you have another CF card you will need to format it before it can be used. Follow the instructions in Appendix A and read Appendix B of your CFM100 manual. Collect your data often.

Let us know if you have other questions.

Janet

One other issue could be that someone may have formatted the card in a PC either using the NTFS format or some obscure variant of FAT format or it is not formatted at all.

To overcome this format the card in the logger - this is the most reliable method. If this is not possible (perhaps you want to do this before visiting the field) you can try formatting the card in the PC specifying FAT32. This, is as Janet said detailed in various sections of the CFM100 manual.
