Read instruments directly from AVW-200

lenin7 Oct 17, 2014 06:13 PM

I'm developing a project that consist on reading some field instruments like piezometers and crackmeters. I'm going to connect this instruments directly to an AM 16/32 multiplexer. The AM 16/32 will be connected to a AVW-200 Interface.

Reading on AVW-200 Datasheet communication I can see that this interface has RS-232 and ASCII Protocol. So my question is if I can read all my instruments by connecting a workstation toward AVW-200 RS-232 Port. We are developing and application that can read all the data coming from AVW-200 RS-232 Port.

Please let me know if this is possible or if is necessarily to install a datalogger like CR1000.

Thank you in advance

I would highly recommend using a CR800 or CR1000 datalogger with the AVW200.

However, there is a terminal interface for direct connection to a PC as detailed in section 5.7 of the AVW200 manual available from our website.

Thank you very much JDavis, I read the AVW200 Manual and apparently it is possible to communicate with instruments through AVW Interface.

So please could you tell me why do you not recommend connecting this way?

For my application there is no need for a datalogger because the application would communicate directly with instruments and save information to a database.

Thank you in advance my dear friend.

I think it is worth mentioning that you can also use SDI-12 to communicate with the AVW200/206/211/216 and have it measure
sensors and return results. You can even issue commands over SDI-12 to have the AVW2xx control a Mux such as the AM16/32.

So you have three ways to communicate with the AVW200 series:
1. Over RS-232 or over the radio using the PakBus protocol (which requires the CR1000, CR3000 or CR800/850 dataloggers using the AVW200 CRBasic instruction)
2. Using the terminal mode over RS-232 (or even over the radio if done correctly - section 5.7 of the manual as mentioned before by JDavis)
3. Using SDI-12 commands (such as when the CR10X or CR23X uses instruction 105 or the CR5000/CR200X uses the SDI12Recorder instruction)

It is conceivable that there could be software on a PC that uses an SDI12 interface and could communicate directly with the AVW200/206/211/216.
