CWS 655 Soil Moisture Sensor Issue

wx2day Mar 13, 2013 02:57 PM

I have 8 CWS 655 sensors deployed. Out of the 8 sensors, only 2 are working properly displaying both soil temperature and soil volume water content. Below are the readings for each site:

Site 1 Soil Temp: 32f Soil Volume Water Content:NAN
Soil Temp: 32f Soil Volume Water Content:NAN

Site 2 Soil Temp: 54f Soil Volume Water Content:36%
Soil Temp: 53f Soil Volume Water Content:37%

Site 3 Soil Temp: 32f Soil Volume Water Content:NAN
Soil Temp: 58f Soil Volume Water Content:NAN

Site 4 Soil Temp: 32f Soil Volume Water Content:NAN
Soil Temp: 32f Soil Volume Water Content:NAN

Has anyone encounterd this when using this particular sensor? If so, How did you resolve issue?

This sounds like it could be that the CS655 SDI-12 address does not match address specified in datalogger program. It could aslo be a power issue.

Check the manual on pg. 34 for a recomended solutions for this issue.

There are really two reasons why a CWS655 (not the CS655 mind you) can report NAN values:

- The sensor is having measurement issues
- The wireless base has not yet picked up the sensor and/or it is having problems polling the sensor for data.

In the first case, you might want to connect to the sensor using the device configuration utility and an A205. This will allow you to look at the measurements that the sensor is making.

In the second and far more likely case, you need to do the following:

- Ensure that the sensor's Base Station Address setting matches the radio address for the base.

- Look at the results returned by the CWB100Routes() instruction. Check to see if the sensors reporting invalid values are there.

- Check the battery level for the sensors reporting invalid values.
