Re: Raven modem + Verizon network coverage

GeodeNZ Jul 12, 2012 05:59 PM

I'm looking at installing a group of CR1000's in a remote field site. I have several Raven modems and high gain directional antennas from past projects.

According to Verizon's coverage map, I'll have the following;
Extended 1X Data Coverage.

What are the chances I'll be able to patch in remotely?
I won't need to move much data, just want to keep an eye on a few parameters.

Thanks

GeodeNZ,

In theory you should be fine as long as the signal is truly 1X. Keep in mind that in extended networks, you're generally not using Verizon towers so the data rates might be a little sub par.

You could take two data loggers and hook a modem up to each on of them. Then go out to a proposed site and see if one logger could talk to another over the cell network (a simple ping would work). This would a least save you a trip setting up a test site then going back to the office to see if you could collect data.

If things are marginal you can do things like decrease packet sizes to help ensure complete data transfer.

Thanks for the information Ken. I deactivated all my modems last year as the projects had ended. I won't be able to try out the telemetry unless the new project gets funded. I'm glad to hear "it could work"....;)

I typically setup the packet size to 200 or so.

Thanks again.
