CS616 with short rod

smile Apr 20, 2012 09:09 AM

Hi to All,

To facilitate installation in the hard soil and to make compatible measurements with other company sensors, that measure smaller volumes of soil (with shorter rods), it is possible cut the rods of the CS616 sensor? After a calibration, someone knows what happens to CS616 sensor with these shorter rods?

Thanks

Smile

You can cut down the rods at your own risk, if you wish, but the probe will need recalibrating. Campbell Scientific do not provide calibrations for shorter rod lengths for the CS616.

With shorter rods the probe will work but with some reduction in accuracy (as the length of rod in the soil contributes a smaller proportion to the total transit time). However, on the plus side probes with shorter rods will work in more saline soils.

If you are looking to buy new probes take a look as the CS650/655 probes which are a step up from the CS616. They measure bulk conductivity, temperature and soil moisture and are much less suscetible to the effects of salinity. The CS655 has shorter rods and a calibration to match.
